Introduction to Bearers
A “bearer” is a logical channel for data transmission with specific QoS (Quality of Service) requirements (e.g., latency, bandwidth). Bearer QoS is transferred via GTP tunnels.
Bearer Level Quality of Service (Bearer QoS)1)
Bearer Data:
- Ensures traffic is prioritized based on application needs.
- Managed by the SMF
- Identified by a QFI (QoS Flow Identifier)
- Two types of bearer exist:
- Dedicated Bearer: Created for specific services (e.g., VoIP, video streaming) required guaranteed QoS.
- Default Bearer: Established during initial registration for general internet access.
