Introduction to Bearers

A “bearer” is a logical channel for data transmission with specific QoS (Quality of Service) requirements (e.g., latency, bandwidth). Bearer QoS is transferred via GTP tunnels.

Bearer Data:

  • Ensures traffic is prioritized based on application needs.
  • Managed by the SMF
  • Identified by a QFI (QoS Flow Identifier)
  • Two types of bearer exist:
    • Dedicated Bearer: Created for specific services (e.g., VoIP, video streaming) required guaranteed QoS.
    • Default Bearer: Established during initial registration for general internet access.
